The National exercise Valahia - Cernavoda

A serious incident took place at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant. Several victims were reported and evacuations began immediately. They were decontaminated and sent either to the field hospital created in Fetesti, or to the Bucharest University Hospital.

The authorities sent information through the Ro alert system and asked the citizens to keep calm.

People must comply with the instructions of law enforcement and notify the authorities in case of exposure to radiation.

As a result of the incident, several states showed their support.

Countries such as France, Norway, USA, Hungary, Israel and Lithuania offered assistance and equipment.

The National exercise Valahia 2023

The national exercise “Valahia 2023” started. It is an opportunity to test the arrangements established according with emergency response plans and procedures under the National Emergency Management System. The exercise, which will involve more than 500 people, will run until 5 October.

The authorities are sending out a series of information messages during this period to protect the population.

The exercise is part of the Norway Grants project – “Improving Nuclear Safety and Security in Romania – Increasing Disaster Resilience and Preparedness for Response to Nuclear and Radiological Events”, funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism.

Valahia 2023 Launch Event

On Tuesday, September 19, the National Commission for the Control of Nuclear Activities (CNCAN) organised at the Marshal Garden Hotel Bucharest, the launch event of the National Exercise Valahia 2023.

The main objective of this initiative is to illustrate and explain the aims and dynamics of the exercise, in a collaborative effort between CNCAN, the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU), the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) and other national entities essential in the management of nuclear and radiological emergencies. The event was also supported by the Vienna International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (DSA).

Among the participants were distinguished representatives of the embassies of partner countries, officials of the Romanian Government and other institutions involved.
